What is Mega Sudoku 16×16?
Mega Sudoku extends the concept of the classic 9×9 Sudoku to a grid of 16×16 cells divided into sixteen 4×4 blocks. Instead of the digits 1 to 9, it uses the numbers 1 to 16. With 256 cells versus the 81 of the classic, the complexity multiplies exponentially.
This format was popularised in Japan in the 1990s under the name Number Place Challenger and today is a standard in international logic-puzzle competitions.
Differences from classic Sudoku
The rules are the same: no repeats in rows, columns or blocks. However, the larger size means:
- Longer, more complex chains of deduction.
- A higher number of initial candidates per cell (up to 16).
- A noticeably longer solving time: experts take between 20 and 90 minutes.
Strategy for Mega Sudoku
The classic Sudoku techniques apply just the same, but hidden pairs and triples within the 4×4 blocks become especially important, along with the X-cycle technique for eliminating candidates in large groups.
